Senate Committee Hears Litany of IRS Cybersecurity Failings
The U.S. Internal Revenue Service's cybersecurity measures are woefully
inadequate, according to testimony presented this week to the Senate
Finance Committee. The hearing was convened to look into how the IRS is
safeguarding taxpayer information this filing season and to determine
improvements, said Sen. Orrin Hatch. Agencies, tax preparers and
Congress have failed taxpayers, Sen. Ron Wyden said.

FBI Paid Hackers to Defeat Security of Shooter's iPhone
The FBI paid hackers to break onto the iPhone of the San Bernardino,
California, shooter, according to a news report published Tuesday. The
bureau obtained the services of gray hats, insiders said, and apparently
did not get help from Cellebrite, as earlier reports had suggested. Gray
hats are hackers who sell flaws to governments or companies that make
surveillance tools.

Publishers vs. Brave Software: Battle for the Ad Viewer
Brave Software is a startup that has ratcheted the ad-blocking game to a
new level, and it is raising a lot of stink in the online community. For
many people, Web-based ads have become an intolerable, costly
distraction. That has led to a variety of ad-blocking approaches. The
use of ad-blocking software is growing, because users feel they are
being attacked by distracting Web-based ads.

ESPN Adds Drone Racing to Its Summer Schedule
The International Drone Racing Association and ESPN on Wednesday
announced a multiyear international media distribution deal. Under the
partnership, the network will showcase the 2016 U.S. National Drone
Racing Championships, which will be held on Governors Island in New York
City this summer. The national championships and the 2016 World Drone
Racing Championships will be streamed live on ESPN3.

Crafting an Online Strategy, Part 2: Where to Sell What You Make
You're making soap or jewelry or handcrafted leather bags, and you want
to sell them online. Where do you go? What spaces work best? How do you
decide where to sell your wares? It's important to choose the right
selling spaces for your products and business strategy. Selling on your
own site lets you control how your products are represented, while
third-party sites offer a network of customers.

Amazon's Kindle Oasis: Lightness of Being at an Unbearable Price?
Amazon on Wednesday launched the Kindle Oasis -- the latest upgrade to
its popular line of e-readers. Along with features that are arguably
revolutionary, it comes with a price point that may shock more than a
few customers. The Oasis is the thinnest and lightest e-reader it has
ever produced, Amazon said. Without the cover, it weighs in at just 4.6
ounces and is only 3.4 mm at its thinnest point.

Male Snubbing Ride-Sharing Service Postpones Launch
Chariot for Women, a ride-sharing service that excludes males 13 and
older, reportedly has postponed its launch to sometime this summer due
to heavier-than-anticipated demand. The company originally had planned
to debut the service in Boston next week. Chariot for Women is open to
all women, including transgender women. Children, including boys under
the age of 13, also may ride.

Fake Loyalty
There's an interesting connection between customer relationships in
subscription businesses and loyalty, Zuora CEO Tien Tzuo wrote recently.
His article had particular resonance for me, since I just wrote a book
about customer loyalty myself. My research is full of old-style
approaches to customer loyalty that aren't really about loyalty so much
as they are about, shall we say, customer coercion.

Officials Named in Panama Papers Cower Behind China's Great Firewall
Chinese authorities have issued censorship instructions to the media
following the release of the Panama Papers, according to news reports
published last week. The leaked documents reportedly listed several top
Chinese officials who used Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca to set up
offshore companies. The names include President Xi Jinping's brother-in-
law Deng Jiagui.

Today's Story Highlights

E2E Encryption Could Make WhatsApp a Spam Magnet
Facebook's WhatsApp last week announced it would roll out end-to-end
encryption for its users, but the move could make the service more
attractive to spammers. While encryption can safeguard information from
data thieves, it also can block data protectors. The policy "will not
stop the growth of spam on the platform and could make the problem
worse," AdaptiveMobile's Simeon Coney said.

HTC 10 Wins Heaps of Praise With a Sprinkling of 'Buts'
HTC this week unveiled its latest flagship smartphone, the HTC 10. The
phone's camera is outfitted with new, larger sensors and 12 million new-
generation UltraPixels. Both the front and rear cameras sport the
world's first optically stabilized, larger-aperture f/1.8 lenses on, the
company said. The rear camera also has a faster laser autofocus.

Tiny Nanocraft May Sail to Neighboring Star System
Stephen Hawking and billionaire Yuri Milner on Tuesday unveiled
Breakthrough Starship, an ambitious $100 million effort to send
miniature spacecraft to another solar system, but the program might not
be quite ready to fly. It calls for a team of engineering and
astrophysics experts to develop nanocrafts that could zoom to the Alpha
Centauri star system at 20 percent the speed of light.

Hortonworks Ramps Up Hadoop Security
Hortonworks this week announced a series of enterprise security efforts
to bolster performance and data safety with its Hortonworks Data
Platform. The company announced that Pivotal Software will standardize
on Hortonworks' Hadoop distribution. The thrust of the product
announcements concerned updates on applying security policies and
maintaining data governance.

Gadget Ogling: Smarter Notes, Livelier Virtual Reality, and Bigger
In-Flight Movies

We've for some time had Moleskine's Smart Notebooks, which allow you to
jot down your thoughts and upload them to Evernote through an app. The
new Smart Writing Set takes that idea and elevates it to a new plane,
letting you quickly turn scrawled notes or doodles into digital files
you can edit using a computer or any mobile app -- no smartphone camera
required.

Facebook Entices VR Content Creators With Open Source Surround Cam
Facebook on Tuesday unveiled a high-quality 360-degree 3D camera
suitable for creating virtual reality content. The Facebook Surround 360
system, which made its debut at the F8 developers conference, includes a
production-ready camera -- which costs about $30,000 to build and looks
like a flying saucer from a science fiction movie -- and software for
controlling the camera and for stitching and rendering what the camera
captures.

Next Apple Watch Will Be More 'S' Than 2
Most of the changes in the next version of the Apple Watch will be on
the inside and not the outside of the case, according to an investors
note issued Monday by Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities. His comments are
consistent with rumors circulating last summer that the design of the
next version of Apple's wrist computer would remain essentially
unchanged.
