Editor's Pick: Learning to Love Virtual Reality

Rob Enderle
Apr 11, 2016 9:56 AM PT
At Nvidia's technology conference, I saw a variety of new technologies showcased. From deep learning systems -- computers that arguably are smarter than we are -- to self-driving cars that can drive better than we can, the technological advances on display made me feel just a tad inadequate. One way to get over my sudden concern over obsolescence was to check out the virtual reality showcase. [More...]

A dozen trucks utilizing an autonomous driving system arrived Wednesday in Rotterdam, Netherlands, after traveling across Europe in the European Truck Platooning Challenge. Please Hold the Music
Remember when your mother used to yell up the stairs to get you to turn your music down? Sometimes, in the age before sensitivity awareness, your dad would do the yelling and he'd substitute noise for music. Ah, the good old days. Too bad they aren't here right now yelling at vendors. ConsumerAffairs.com is the brainchild of James R. Hood, a former Washington, D.C., journalist. [More...]
Qubes' Xen-Like Security Requires a Leap of Faith
If you want an effective and different approach to computer platform security, turn to the Qubes OS. Be prepared to adjust your expectations and your computing comfort zone, however. The Qubes OS does not work the way other Linux distros work in adding extra layers of security. It is based on the Fedora Linux desktop but goes well beyond Fedora's approach. [More...]

Verizon May Be Tuning Up for Yodeling Contest
Verizon reportedly is planning to make a formal first-round bid for the
core assets of Yahoo when the company begins fielding offers on Monday.
Verizon, whose CEO last month confirmed his company's interest, is
working with executives of its AOL subsidiary and three financial
advisors to put together a bid by the April 11 deadline, according to
the report.

Illicit Weapons Traders Flock to Facebook
Facebook has served as an online marketplace for armed militias in Libya
and other war-torn countries, according to a news report published
Wednesday. An array of light weapons bought and sold after the fall of
Moammar Gadhafi unleashed a torrent of unregulated commerce in Libya,
which previously had controlled online communications strictly,
according to a study by Armament Research Services.

Disrupting Software Development in an On-Demand World
The idea that software is eating the world has become a generally
accepted dictum. Everywhere you look, industries and institutions are
being disrupted by the unprecedented power of software. Now, the world
is demanding a new way to develop software to keep pace with the pace of
disruption. The greatest poster child for the brave new world of
software-driven business is General Electric.

Report Throws the Book at Yahoo
Yahoo is in the midst of a financial freefall, based on a report that
claims the company's deal book shows a muddled and confusing financial
picture that has made potential investors nervous about any effort to
salvage the business. Yahoo's internal presentation for investors paints
a picture of a company moving entirely in the wrong direction, according
to the report.

New Features Boost Sharing via Facebook Live
Facebook on Wednesday announced enhanced Facebook Live video
capabilities with additional features to allow members to share live
video with friends and family by broadcasting events or sharing video in
groups. Users can go live in Facebook groups so that a group of users or
friends or family members can be sent specific video feeds. The feature
has an interactive quality.

Salesforce's MetaMind Buy Fuels CRM's AI Arms Race
MetaMind, a startup focused on deep learning, this week announced that
it has been acquired by Salesforce. The company's expertise is in
natural language processing -- letting computers analyze relationships
between words. "We'll be able to offer customers real AI solutions with
breakthrough capabilities that further automate and personalize customer
support," MetaMind CEO Richard Socher said.

Reddit's Blocking Tool Balances Free Speech With Right to Ignore
Reddit this week announced that it has extended the reach of its
blocking tool, which was introduced in 2011 to let users fight
harassment. The tool previously focused on blocking private messages;
now it can block comments to users' posts. Clicking the Block User
button while viewing a reply will hide the blocked user's profile,
comments, posts and messages without that user's knowledge.

White House Takes a Pass on Encryption Debate
It appears that the Obama administration will refrain from giving its
outspoken support to any legislation that aims to compel high-tech
companies to help law enforcement agencies crack mobile phone
encryption. On the other hand, it won't level any outspoken opposition
either. Introduction of such a bill -- sponsored by Sens. Dianne
Feinstein and Richard Burr -- is expected soon.

Vivaldi Flaunts Its Plus-Size Browser Attributes
Vivaldi on Wednesday launched the first release of its eponymously named
browser. Vivaldi is the brainchild of CEO Jon von Tetzchner, a cofounder
of Opera Software. Aimed at the power user, Vivaldi 1.0 packs in
features that were stripped out of Opera 12. However, "Vivaldi is not
about a single feature," von Tetzchner said. "Vivaldi is more about a
philosophy."

Volkswagen Picks Mirantis to Build Massive OpenStack Cloud
Mirantis on Wednesday announced that Volkswagen Group has selected
Mirantis OpenStack to power its cloud applications. The selection
process involved a series of cloud-to-cloud performance trials between
Red Hat and Mirantis, one of the last pure-play OpenStack companies.
It's ideally positioned to pursue and win large-scale deals like the
Volkswagen project, analyst Charles King said.
