Neural Nets Give Low-End Phone Pics DSLR Look
Researchers have found a way to use neural networks to create DSLR-
quality photos from snapshots taken with low-end smartphones. A team of
scientists at the ETH Zurich Computer Vision Lab recently published a
paper describing a deep learning approach that uses neural networks to
translate photos taken by cameras with limited capabilities into DSLR-
quality photos automatically.

Sonar Could Help Devs Build a Better Website
Microsoft's Sonar, released under an open source license, could help
developers build more effective and secure websites. Sonar, a linting
tool and site scanner, is the next evolution of the static scan tool,
according to Microsoft. The team that developed Microsoft's Edge browser
created Sonar as a better way for website maintainers to check
performance and security issues.

Fake News: Amazon Wants a Key to Your House
I'm getting tired of headlines that present something you might want to
do as something you'd have to be crazy to do. Last week was a case in
point: Headline after headline shouted out that Amazon wanted to get a
key to your house. The initial reaction was hell no -- but the reality
is far more nuanced. You see, there are a lot of folks who live in
places where their front entrance isn't secure.

Super Mario Odyssey Has Reviewers Jumping for Joy
Nintendo appears to have knocked it out of the park with Thursday's
offical launch of its new Super Mario Odyssey title, which appears to
have won over video game critics and promises to drive Nintendo Switch
sales well into the holidays. The reception is another lift for
Nintendo, which has been riding high following strong reviews of the
title at the E3 conference earlier this year.

Today's Story Highlights

Amazon May Disrupt Prescription Drug Space Next
The rumor that Amazon has set its sights on disrupting the
pharmaceutical industry has gained greater currency recently, just
months after the company set the grocery business on fire with its
acquisition of Whole Foods, and in the midst of its widely publicized
search for a second U.S. headquarters location. Amazon reportedly has
taken major steps toward becoming a drug distributor and seller.

Oil Patch CRM
A recent story chilled me to the bone. The headline supplies all the
reasons: "Saudi Arabia's Grand Plan to Move Beyond Oil: Big Goals,
Bigger Hurdles." At first glance, this doesn't ring any CRM bells, but
maybe it should. Why would any business or business-state contemplate
moving out of its sweet spot if it weren't required to? What happens to
the customers that have become dependent?

New Search Tool Helps Firms Find the Best B2B Software Fit
Siftery on Thursday announced the launch of its new Product Alternatives
search tool, which is designed to help companies find alternative B2B
software products when replacements are needed. It allows users to
search a database of more than 40,000 software options, Siftery said.
Its AI technology not only helps find suitable alternative products, but
also ranks the various options.

The Morning After: iPhone X, Day 1

It's Tuesday, October 31, 2017.

Hey, good morning! You look fabulous.

Happy Halloween (and Día de Muertos)! We’ve been talking about the AI that makes photo-realistic (non-existent) celebrity faces, PlayStation’s big Paris showcase and the “accelerator on a chip” that could revolutionize medicine. Oh, and we have our first impressions of the iPhone X.

Day 1.

Apple iPhone X

Apple iPhone X

You'll have to wait a little longer for our full review -- we've only been testing the phone for about a day -- but there's already plenty to get into. No home button, OLED screen, Animoji, and more. Take a look and find out why Chris Velazco says this device “drastically redefines the iPhone as we know it.”

A true jack-of-all-trades in the health-centric smartwatch world.

Samsung Gear Sport review: a versatile fitness-first smartwatch

Samsung Gear Sport review: a versatile fitness-first smartwatch

The battle for must-have wearables continues, and Samsung’s Gear Sport is a jack of many trades and master of few. Samsung stuffed the smartwatch with an ambitious array of features -- from fitness, calorie and sleep-tracking to smart home control, contactless payments, music playback and more. Some of these, like guided workouts and smartphone notifications, work well. Others, like sleep-tracking, lag the competition. Still, this is a powerful, versatile and attractive smartwatch for the price.

Samsung will release the software needed at a future date.

Samsung read the last e-waste report from Greenpeace, too, and likely wasn’t too happy about the slamming it got from the organization. Which leads us to the Korean electronics juggernaut’s system for upcycling old phones. Specifically, the company rigged a bunch of them together and turned them into a bitcoin-mining contraption.

1-UP.

Nintendo expects Switch will beat Wii U lifetime sales in a year

Mario has only just landed, and already Nintendo thinks the Switch could best the Wii U lifetime sales in its first year. The older console only reached 13.56 million sales over the entirety of its five-year lifetime.

Go fast.

Here’s everything of import from PlayStation’s showcase in France yesterday. The Last of Us 2, anyone?

Big scientific advancements sometimes come in small packages.

Stanford’s ‘accelerator on a chip’ could revolutionize medical care

Stanford’s ‘accelerator on a chip’ could revolutionize medical care

When the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory at Stanford first opened its doors in 1966, it had already earned the distinction of housing the world’s longest linear accelerator: A 3.2- kilometer monstrosity buried 25 feet under the gently rolling hills of northern California. Today the lab, along with an international consortium of research organizations, is working to create a new kind of accelerator -- one small enough to fit in a shoebox but offering huge scientific potential.

But wait, there's more...

1. What's on TV: 'Call of Duty,' 'Shameless' and 'The Dark Tower'

2. Sprint owner SoftBank may be calling off T-Mobile merger

3. Samsung collects record profits, again

4. Neural network creates photo-realistic images of fake celebs

5. This might be our best look at the OnePlus 5T yet
