Editor's Pick: Germany Could Ding Facebook for Fake News

Richard Adhikari
Dec 30, 2016 8:00 AM PT
The frenzied 2016 election cycle mercifully is over, but Facebook's fake news problem isn't going away. The company may face steep fines in Germany if it fails to address it satisfactorily. A bill slated for consideration next year would establish fines of up to $500,000 euros per day for each day that a fake news story persisted after notification of its falsehood was provided. 2017: More Apple Security Flaws, Cyberattacks, Hacktivisim
More security vulnerabilities will appear in the software of Adobe and Apple than in Microsoft's, more attacks on the Internet's infrastructure will occur, and cybersecurity events will stoke international tensions. Those are a few of the predictions for 2017 that security experts have made. Signs of hackers' increased interest in Adobe and Apple started appearing in 2016, Trend Micro noted. [More...]
Apple, Ireland Balk at EU's Bill for Back Taxes
Apple and the Irish government are fighting what some view as a European Union tax grab. The two recently filed a formal appeal of the EC's decision ordering Apple to pay nearly $14 billion in back taxes, based on its finding that Ireland had given Apple several illegal tax breaks. The Morning After: Amazon's drone mothership plans

eng-daily-newsletter

It's Friday, December 30, 2016.

It's Friday, good morning!

2016 is almost over, but sliding in just under the wire is a wild new delivery idea from Amazon. There's also donut-shaped Mars shelters, and our take on Apple's 2016: it's not a positive one.

I heard you like delivery drones

Amazon apparently wants to deploy delivery drones from flying warehouses

While Amazon only just recently started delivering to real customers via drone, it has even bigger ideas. A patent filing reveals a system where they take off from floating blimps stocked with commonly requested products.

Sex at CES: An uncomfortable coupling
The adult industry and CES have a longer relationship than you might know. From 1984 to 1998 porn was a part of CES, until AVN split off for its own concurrently running show. Now, the two expos take place weeks apart, and porn has almost no presence at the electronics show. Christopher Trout’s latest column explains how we got here, and how sex is creeping back in via VR and connected toy makers like OhMiBod.

2016 was a hard year to be an Apple fan

2016 was a hard year to be an Apple fan
The company didn’t have a great year: iPhone sales declined for the first time, and Apple's profits followed suit. Apple also launched confusing product lineups with weird and arguably unnecessary compromises. It seems like plenty of loyal Apple supporters might be contemplating life outside the company's ecosystem.

US officially responds to Russian “malicious cyber activity”

After months of consideration, the feds have taken action in response to suspected Russian election hacking. The DHS and FBI released a joint report describing how Russia attacked the US, while the State Department is shutting down two Russian compounds and expelling 35 intelligence operatives. According to President Obama: “These actions are not the sum total of our response to Russia’s aggressive activities. We will continue to take a variety of actions at a time and place of our choosing, some of which will not be publicized.”

Soon.

Welcome to the Mars Ice Home. This conceptual design consists of a torus -- a large, inflatable inner tube -- lined with a shell of water ice. Not only is the structure lightweight, it incorporates materials from Mars itself. In addition, the water, which protects against cosmic rays, could be repurposed as rocket fuel for the Mars Ascent Lander. Useful when all resources and space is at a premium.

DirecTV Now’s $35 special offer will only be available for a few more days

AT&T launched its streaming TV service with a package offering 100 channels for $35 a month, but only for a limited time. We now know how limited that is, since its website says the offer will go away after January 9th. If you sign up in time then you can keep the promo price (for how long is unspecified), but once it’s gone, it’s gone.

Softbank has cut a check for $1 billion to OneWeb, which plans to build

parts of the world, the companies announced Monday. Helmed by satellite
industry veteran Greg Wyler, OneWeb raised a total of $1.2 billion in

2017: AI's Coming Out Party
AI will be having a big coming out party in 2017. While there are plenty
of opportunities in this space for workers, executives, investors and

will become a serious winner in the field. As advanced as AI is -- and I
have seen some technology that would blow your socks off -- not every
company is created equal.

The Morning After: Tesla's Autopilot avoids a crash before it happens and Twitter's bad 2016

eng-daily-newsletter

It's Thursday, December 29, 2016.

Hey, good morning!

It’s December 29th and we’re looking back on Twitter’s rough 2016, Tesla’s Autopilot avoiding accidents and another Amazon sale day.

ESP, AI or something else?

Tesla’s Autopilot saw this accident coming and avoided it

Tesla’s Autopilot saw this accident coming and avoided it
Like many other driver assists, Tesla’s Autopilot feature bounces radar off the road to see what’s happening two cars ahead. That’s information a human driver wouldn’t have otherwise, and as you can see in this video, it helped a Model X avoid joining an accident in the Netherlands. Whether or not they’re ready for full self-driving tech, this may at least sell drivers on the effectiveness of Forward Collision Warning systems.

The next step after having a robot clean up after you is adding voice commands for the full Jetsons experience. The VR7000 doesn’t have a video display, humanoid appearance or snappy retorts, but now it can start cleaning whenever you say it should. That feature comes thanks to a connection with Amazon’s Alexa system unless you’d prefer to take control directly via an app on your phone.

Samsung reveals new 32-bit audio systems, UHD Blu-ray player

Samsung reveals new 32-bit audio systems, UHD Blu-ray player
CES doesn’t start until next week, but we’re already seeing new gadgets revealed, like the “Ultra High Quality” (UHQ) Hi-Fi system and soundbar Samsung just unveiled. It’s claiming that upconverting audio to 32-bit brings a new level of qualit and that it can provide decent bass without a subwoofer. On the video side, Samsung’s second-gen Ultra HD Blu-ray player will put movies on your phone (somehow), and configure tricky HDR settings automatically.

The trouble with trolls

Twitter spent 2016 pouring gasoline on its fires

Twitter spent 2016 pouring gasoline on its fires
Twitter has a dedicated user base, so why is it in this year’s losing column? A failure to deal with harassment and hate speech on its platform leads the list of reasons and is likely why it failed to find a buyer. Now CEO Jack Dorsey gets a chance to save Twitter as a standalone company -- if he can fix the problems instead of making them worse.

Blizzard is celebrating the Diablo series anniversary across its other games

Blizzard is celebrating the Diablo series anniversary across its other games

Blizzard is marking the 20th birthday of Diablo (the game, not the monster), adding themed events and extras to several of its games. The third (and latest) Diablo game, unsurprisingly, gets the most lavish treatment. It's going to get a Darkening of Tristram event that lets you visit a "reimagined" version of the original game's cathedral, including some familiar pick-ups. Overwatch, Hearthstone and more titles will also have something to commemorate the influential online RPG series.

Smarter and sleeker.

Ford's latest self-driving car almost looks like a regular one
Ford has revealed the first images of its new self-driving Fusion Hybrid, with a more powerful computer and improved sensors. It also packs lower-profile LIDAR units that appear to be the "Puck" models from Velodyne, a company in which it recently invested $150 million, making it look less like some gadget-strapped prototype auto.

Up to 50 percent off apps, e-books, games, movies and music.

Amazon is preparing a big digital-only sale for December 30th

Amazon’s next big sale day is December 30th at 3AM ET, and it’s centered around that digital content that we all love. It’s the ideal secondary sale: filling those new phones and games consoles with enough content to take you through the early months of 2017. Amazon is promising breaks on games like Destiny: Rise of Iron, Rocket League and Titanfall 2, but you’ll have to shop around on the 30th to see the full selection.

But wait, there's more...

1. Chinese hackers allegedly stole secrets from US law firms

2. LG's next headset is a wearable surround sound speaker, too

3. Lenovo's latest ThinkPads ship bloatware-free
